Bone Marrow Transplantation

Bone marrow transplants have become a vital component in the treatment of certain blood cancers, aiming to control or cure the disease, extend life expectancy, and enhance quality of life. Stem cell transplants hold the potential to induce cancer remission or even cure it.

Our network provides cutting-edge protocols for bone marrow transplantation, facilitated through globally respected medical facilities and esteemed leaders in the field of medicine. These facilities are internationally renowned centers of excellence, boasting impressive success rates and the highest standards of care. Our multidisciplinary team of specialists includes world-renowned experts in hematology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. Treatment plans are meticulously tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient.

Stem cells, found in the bone marrow and blood, play a crucial role in producing essential blood cells necessary for survival. However, hematological cancers and treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy can damage the bone marrow, impairing the stem cells’ ability to produce blood cells. In such cases, a transplant can serve to replenish the compromised bone marrow. Moreover, a stem cell transplant may also aid in combating the cancer itself, as donated cells possess the ability to target and eliminate cancer cells more effectively than the recipient’s immune cells.

More than 4,200 bone marrow transplants (over 1,380 in pediatrics) had been performed by December 2019 in Hadassah Hospital.

In August 2018, the BMT department of Hadassah Hospital became the first Israeli bone marrow transplantation center that received full accreditation from the International Joint Accreditation Committee ISCT-EUROPE & EBMT (JACIE).

ORPHAN (RARE GENETIC) DISEASES, LYMPHOMA, LEUKEMIA

The Hospital has a vast experience of BMT not only in leukemia and lymphoma, but also in the treatment of non-malignant rare genetic (orphan) diseases in pediatrics. The treatment protocols in the Hospital demonstrate very good results, many children recover completely.

TYPES OF NON-MALIGANT DISEASES:

  • Osteopetrosis: Hadassah Hospital has one of the best achievements in the world — 100 % survival (!) for patients with a donor (not necessarily a relative)
  • All disorders of the bone marrow, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, e.g. Fanconi anemia (as per the statistics, the quantity of BMTs performed in Hadassah Hospital for patients with this disease is one of the largest in the world)
