INNOVATIONS OF UROLOGY SUCCESSFULLY APPLIED IN ISRAEL
Urological surgeons of the hospital prefer less traumatic endoscopic and laparoscopic methods to open surgeries and in 45% of cases they manage to replace extensive interventions with sparing procedures. In urology, the laparoscopic approach is especially relevant due to the location of organs behind the peritoneal cavity. Gentle surgery is extremely important when it comes to newborns and children. Pediatric urology unit has treated hundreds of cases of hypospadias and other birth defects by minimally invasive methods, performed dozens of pyeloplasty and other reconstructive surgeries. Urologic surgeons of the clinic operate in a newly built modern complex, which is equipped according to the highest standards on the same level as best hospitals in USA.
Robotic surgery system “Da Vinci”
Robotic surgery is a type of laparoscopic surgery, just in this case the instruments are not in the hands of the surgeon, but are fixed by four manipulators of the Da Vinci installation. The robot does not operate autonomously, it is a flawless device that reduces the likelihood of errors to zero and greatly expands the capabilities of the surgeon, however requires great skills and brilliant mastery of the expert who’s operating this technology. The robot surgeon is used for various purposes: to remove the prostate, correct congenital defects in the genitourinary system, and others. The most experienced specialist of the hospital practicing with the Da Vinci robot in the fields of urology is the Head of department, Prof. Ofer Gofrit.
THULIUM – only in Hadassah University Hospital
Prostatectomy done by powerful THULIUM laser allows to avoid the side effects. One of the advantages of the laser is the ability to treat patients who are on anticoagulant therapy without stopping the medications. After laser removal of the prostate, the patient usually doesn’t need to stay in the hospital more than a day instead of three days in case of the regular procedure. In Israel, only two specialists operate with THULIUM: Prof. Ofer Gofrit and Prof. Dov Pode.
Kidney Stone Treatment: Shock Wave Lithotripsy
Back in 1985, Hadassah Hospital became the pioneer in Israeli using this safe technology. In 2010, the hospital, also the first in the country, purchased an innovative Dornier Gemini lithotripter, which is much more accurate and comfortable for the patient. The device is equipped with the most advanced tools of ultrasound and X-ray navigation. Its design makes the access to areas of kidneys and urinary tract much easier. The age of patients treated in the lithotripsy center under the guidance of prof. Duvdevani varies from 5 to 107 years old. A five-year-old girl had a large stone removed from her right kidney by a Dornier Gemini lithotripter. For the oldest patient, the new technology helped to get rid of a stone in the upper part of the urethra.
Innovative chemotherapy with Synergo® system
When malignant tissues in the bladder cannot be completely removed by endoscopic surgery, because of the large areas of lesions, Hadassah Clinic uses an innovative method of INTRAVESICAL MICROWAVE (RF) INDUCED THERMO-CHEMOTHERAPY FOR THE TREATMENT OF NON-MUSCLE INVASIVE BLADDER CANCER. Synergo® is a computer-embedded intravesical irrigation system combined with an energy-delivering unit. The System includes a RF generator that delivers radiofrequency energy at 915 MHz (the lower limit of microwave electromagnetism), a drug circulating unit and a microprocessor with application specific software. The system connects to the Synergo® transurethral RF applicator. The treatment is based on controlled RF radiation (non-ionising microwave radiation) of the bladder tissue, along with instillations of the bladder with chemotherapy (thermochemotherapy). The patient is treated on an outpatient basis in a series of weekly one-hour treatments with no need for anaesthesia. The user interface consists of a computer and a monitor with touch screen. The software monitors and records treatment parameters in real-time during the treatment session.
