Varicocele is an enlargement of the veins of the spermatic cord. This condition may occure commonly on the left spermatic cord.
Sometimes, varicocele causes no symptoms and is harmless. But sometimes a varicocele causes pain or atrophy (shrinkage), or fertility problems. Several studies have shown that there is a higher rate of infertility in men with a varicocele, compared to those who did not have a varicocele.
Varicocele can be diagnosed during a physical examination. It can be also reliably diagnosed with ultrasound.
Large or unsightly varicocele can be removed surgically. The surgery is made under general anaesthetic. The surgical procedure can be done on an outpatient basis. Surgeon makes an incision above the scrotum and cuts through the layers of tissue to expose the veins. The affected veins are ligated or tied off.
Laparoscopic techniques allow treatment through smaller incisions to reduce discomfort.
