Hydrocele means a sac of water. A hydrocele is an accumulation of watery liquid that has built up around a testicle. Decreased resorption of this fluid can be the cause of hydrocele. Tumor, inflammation, trauma may also cause to impaired drainage of the liquid into the circulation properly.
In most cases hydrocele causes no symptoms, but it can grow and cause discomfort.
A hydrocele is usually diagnosed by examining the scrotum, which may appear enlarged. An ultrasound may be used to confirm the diagnosis of a hydrocele.
Surgical elimination is perhaps the most effective form of hydrocele treatment. Patients have a general anaesthetic so that they are asleep during the operation. A cut is made into the skin over the hydrocele and liquid is emptied out. It is important to check urine pass and empty bladder within 6 to 12 hours of the operation. After an operation there may be some discomfort on moving. Painkilling tablets should easily control this discomfort.
